Tonight we are back in Bangkok for a short stop before our flight tomorrow to the islands. We were dropped off at Banglamphu, the "Backpackers Ghetto" in Bangkok, and we ran into a bug cart so I thought I'd post a picture. I have been building myself us to trying these, but I just couldn't do it. Nope. Too disgusting.
When I first saw the picture, I thought that it was of a cart of dried chili peppers. I've heard of chocolate-covered bugs in Africa, but I didn't realise that the Asians have their own variations on the theme. How do they prepare them? Do they deep fry them or just dry them out?
ReplyDeleteSome of the carts had bugs that looked like they were deep fried. The one in the picture looked like they may have been dried or stir-fried. I think they add different types of peppers and salt.
ReplyDeleteI had convinced myself that I was going to try bugs when we went to Hong Kong. Apparently Hong Kong is too western to serve bugs like you would find in Beijing or elsewhere.
ReplyDeleteI hope you guys are having a great trip. I had lost your blog address and am trying to catch up now. I feel insanely jealous.
Philip! It's all good, even the bad parts. Also me and Magda still didn't kill each other. Yet...
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like your "bungle in the jungle" was a close call, but you didn't kill yourselves or each other. (Believe it or not, I had a somewhat similar experience with a hike during one of my trips. I said to myself afterwards "Woo, I'm still alive. Now why did I do that again?!")
